Tabu is for arranged marriage

Tabu, 39, has announced that she wants to go for an arranged marriage.

How convenient, considering that in her latest release Toh Baat Pakki the actress plays a matronly small-town woman who will go to any extent to find the perfect match for her sister.

"After lot of thought, I feel an arranged marriage would be great because I have had enough of love. Although love marriages are a norm these days, there is lot to be said about the benefits of an arranged one too," Tabu says.

Coming from Tabu, who has had her rather public share of relationships - ranging from Sanjay Kapoor to producer Sajid Nadiadwala to Telugu superstar Nagarjuna - her latest idea on marriage may seem surprising. Quite obviously, Tabu makes an indirect confession that her latest take on marriage could have something to do with the particular image she is trying to establish as part of the film's promotion. She admits that her decision is an outcome of brainstorming over "some residual matter from Toh Baat Pakki".

"My elder sister Farah keeps telling me what to do, and how to do it. She always has helped me make the majority of decisions in my life, so she can't stop doling out advice even today. I love it. I don't mind it as it is her love for me that makes her take decisions on my behalf and in my best interests," she says.

The idea of hardselling a public image that helps the cause of a film's promotion seems to be gaining ground in Bollywood these days. Gone are the days when such activities were restricted to random link-ups between a film's hero and heroine.

While that ploy still works (sample Ranbir Kapoor's reported affair with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani co-star Katrina Kaif just before the film's release, of which nothing was further heard after the film opened), of Bollywood publicity machinery now looks for more original ideas. So, Priyanka Chopra was aggressively seen making public appearances in her bubbly, cool-girl-withcropped hair avatar around the time Pyar Impossible was set for release. Aamir Khan famously "vanished" before the release of his last hit, 3 Idiots, in sync with a vital plot twist in the film.

Aamir also gave fans his trademark Ghajini haircut in Delhi shortly before the film opened.

Akshay Kumar went around sporting a fashionable stubble around the opening date of Singh Is Kinng, to promote his Sikh look in the film. And Vidya Balan was regularly seen in bright printed cotton saris in sync with her character of Ishqiya at every public do before the film opened.

Tabu's soundbytes and matronly image, in keeping with her film's the theme of arranged marriage and relationships, seem natural in this age of Bollywood hardsell.

"Every time stars promote a new film, they have to do it with by answering the same questions. Carrying forth the image from a film into their public lives helps strike immediate connect with the audience in an innovative manner and also adds to the value of the film. It also helps create a recall value for the film and the character," filmmaker Ken Ghosh said.

Ghosh's take seems to overlook something called audience intelligence. It could appear insulting to deem that the audience is gullible enough to buy a film solely because it is being peddled in such as gimmicky manner.

A film like Pyar Impossible still flops despite such a push. And come to think of it, despite Tabu's newfound line on arranged marriage, Toh Baat Pakki hasn't opened very well.
